Raphael Kalinowski (birth name Józef Kalinowski , religious name Raphael of St. Joseph ; born September 1, 1835 in Vilnius , Lithuania , † November 15, 1907 in Wadowice , Poland ) was a Polish Carmelite priest . He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Kalinowski was the son of a professor. He joined the Imperial Russian Army , eventually became an officer and directed the construction of the railway line from Kursk to Odessa via Kiev . In 1863 he joined the Polish people's uprising , was arrested, tried and sentenced to forced labor in Siberian mines. After ten years he returned to his homeland, but soon left it and went to Paris , where he worked as tutor to Prince August Czartoryski . In 1877 he joined the Discalced Carmelites in Graz , where he received the religious name "Raphael of St. Joseph". Kalinowski studied theology, was ordained a priest and then worked in Poland as provincial vicar of his order (he is considered to be the restorer of the order in Poland) and as a missionary in Russia.
