Ubald von Gubbio (actually Ubaldo Baldassini , * around 1080/85 in Gubbio ; † May 16, 1160 ) was Bishop of Gubbio and was canonized .

Life

He was born into a noble family in Gubbio , Umbria , Italy . His parents died early, which is why he grew up in a monastery. In 1114 Ubald was ordained a priest and distributed his inheritance to the poor. Ubald was probably appointed Bishop of Gubbio by Pope Honorius II in 1129 , after he had previously rejected the election of Bishop of Perugia .

effect

Pope Celestine III canonized Ubald on March 5, 1192.

Saint Ubald is depicted in episcopal garb with a devil fleeing from him; He is considered the patron saint of children as well as a saint against nervous disorders and obsession .

A finger relic by Ubald is venerated in the Münster zu Thann in Alsace. The pilgrimage to Thann was very popular in the Middle Ages, especially in northern Germany, where the saint was known as Theobald von Thann , St. Enwold or St. Ewald .

Today there is a festival in Gubbio in honor of Saint Ubald, the Corsa dei Ceri (the wax candle run).
