The Münster zu Thann (actually "Theobalduskirche", French : Collégiale Saint-Thiébaut ) is a Gothic church in the Alsatian town of Thann . In addition to the much larger ministers in Strasbourg and Freiburg im Breisgau, it is considered to be one of the main and masterpieces of Gothic architecture and furnishings on the Upper Rhine .

history

The Alsatian town of Thann was first mentioned in a document in 1290 ( town charter 1360). Three years earlier, however, a church is mentioned that was consecrated to St. Theobald ( Ubald von Gubbio , d. 1160), the Bishop of Gubbio . From this a finger relic is venerated in the church, which had miraculously got from Italy to the Vosges.

The construction of today's collegiate church began in the first half of the 14th century (south aisle, lower part of the west facade). In 1351 construction began on the choir and the tower. Around 1400 the Marientympanon was built above the west portal, which, based on biblical and apocryphal reports, depicts the life of Our Lady. The choir consecration took place in 1432. From around 1490 construction began again under master builder Remigius Faesch : by 1492 he completed the north aisle and in 1495 the central nave. Faesch completed the church tower in 1516. 1629–31 the Chapel of Our Lady was built on the southern nave. From 1887 to 1895 the minster received buttress pinnacles and colorful tiled roofs.

In 1970 the artist Erwin Bowien (1899–1972) created one of his most important late works with his oil painting of the cathedral.

description

Despite its small size, the minster is one of the great Gothic architectures in the south of the medieval empire. Elevation and vaults offer examples of the artificial language of the High and Late Gothic; the triforial interior elevation of the nave center nave is typical for the south-west of the empire (cf. Martinsmünster Colmar , Freiburg Minster , Ulm Minster ).

Unique and one of the two showpieces of the minster is the 18 meter high and 8 meter wide portal on the well-proportioned west facade : the two actual portals with archivolts , garment figures and tympana are covered by another and correspondingly larger portal funnel, which in turn has three archivolts and a five-line structure Owns tympanum. This composition offers space for 150 sculptural scenes in which around 500 individual figures cavort. Immediately above the portal Christ as Judge of the World with John the Baptist and the Blessed Mother. In the roof gable St. Theobald with pilgrims. 4 buttresses on each side of the nave. Pinnacles and figures 19th century. The second showpiece is the tower, one of the few with a medieval tracery helmet (height 22 meters; late Gothic tracery; close proximity to Basel Minster ). Total height of the tower 76 meters; octagonal from 40 meters high; open staircase spindle in the southeast corner; oldest bell from 1467. Inside, among other things, a seated figure of Saint Theobald; Winegrower's Madonna around 1510; in the choir, statues of apostles from the 15th century; Main altar from 1845; Baroque wall paintings by François Hillenweck (born May 22, 1673 in Thann, † October 11, 1748 ibid); the choir stalls (after 1442) are one of the most beautiful in Alsace and have a multitude of imaginative details (restoration 1900–1902, extension to the east in 1906). 15th century stained glass .

organ

The organ of the cathedral was built in 2001 by the organ builder Michel Gaillard, in the historic organ case from 1888, which was built for the instrument of the time by the organ builder Martin Rinckenbach. Today's organ work is based on the Rinckenbach instrument of that time, which had 42 stops on three manuals and a pedal . Today's organ has 49 registers on four manuals and a pedal.
