Rebekka Ar Rayès
Rafqa (Rebekka) Pietra Choboq Ar-Rayès (born June 29, 1832 in Himlaya, near Bikfaya , Lebanon , † March 23, 1914 in Al Dahr, Lebanon) was a Maronite nun . She is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church .
Life
Rebekka Ar Rayès entered a monastery of the Maronite Order of Anthony in 1871 . She had previously escaped the 1860 massacre that the Druze had inflicted on the Maronites. From 1897 she lived in the Joseph Monastery (Mar Yûsuf) in Jrabtâ near Batrun in northern Lebanon. During her monastic life, Rebekah Ar Rayès had to endure severe physical and mental suffering, whereby she was characterized by a deep piety and faithfulness.
Worship, beatification and canonization
Soon after her death on March 23, 1914, Rebekah's grave became a destination for many pilgrims .
On November 17, 1985, Pope John Paul II beatified Rebekah Ar Rayès . He canonized her on June 10, 2001 . “Rafqa”, as it is called in Arabic, belongs with the Saints. Scharbel Machluf and Nimatullah al-Hardini on the three canonized Lebanese.
