Rafael Alkorta Martínez (born September 16, 1968 in Bilbao ) is a former Spanish football player .

Career

Center- back Rafael Alkorta started playing football for his long-time club Athletic Bilbao at the age of ten . As early as 1985 he became a professional player here, but did not make his debut in the Primera División until October 24, 1987 . After 172 first division appearances for Bilbao, he moved to Real Madrid in 1993 , where he and Fernando Hierro formed a strong duo in central defense. He came back to Athletic Bilbao in 1997 and played there until 2002 before retiring. Rafael Alkorta was considered a tough man, similar to Jürgen Kohler in Germany .

For the Spanish national soccer team he made 54 appearances and took part in four major tournaments: World Cup 1990 in Italy , World Cup 1994 in the USA , European Championship 1996 in England and World Cup 1998 in France .
