Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao signed the then 17-year-old from league rivals CA Osasuna for six million euros in the summer of 2006, although he had not played a first division game before. In the Primera División he made his debut on August 27, 2006 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw at home against Real Sociedad . At Athletic, he became an undisputed regular player in his first season and played 35 league games, 32 of them in the starting line-up. He scored three goals in the 2006/07 season , including a "brace" in a 2-0 away game against Deportivo La Coruña .

Also in the following two seasons, 2007/08 and 2008/09 , he was placed in the central midfield of the Basques and reached the final of the King's Cup in 2009 . Although he lost 4-1 with Athletic Bilbao to FC Barcelona , the club qualified through the third qualifying round and play-offs for the group stage of the 2009/10 Europa League .

Before the start of the 2009/10 season , he was under discussion at Liverpool FC as a replacement for Xabi Alonso, who had migrated to Real Madrid . Ultimately, however, he stayed in Bilbao and achieved his career record of six league goals in 34 games in the 2009/10 season. In the Europa League he survived the group stage with Athletic, but was eliminated in the round of 32 against RSC Anderlecht . He narrowly missed the re-entry into the Europa League with Bilbao that season. Six game days before the end, they had been on a table position that would have entitled to participate.

In 2011/12 Martínez reached the Europa League final with his team, but had to admit defeat to league rivals Atlético Madrid . A few weeks later, the final of the King's Cup was lost 3-0 to FC Barcelona .

At the European Championships 2012 in Ukraine and Poland Martínez was again in the Spanish squad. In the 4-0 group victory over Ireland's selection , he came on in the 65th minute for Xabi Alonso and thus had a share in the 2012 European Championship, which his team around Iker Casillas , Andrés Iniesta and Fernando Torres won in 2008.

Since he only had a short stint at the recently held European Championship, Martínez was appointed as one of the three permitted over-23 players in the squad of the Olympic selection team for the 2012 Olympic football tournament in London , which mainly consisted of younger non-European champions.
