Aitor Karanka de la Hoz (born September 18, 1973 in Vitoria , Álava ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach .
Career
The center-back began his career in the youth teams of Corazonistas and Deportivo Alavés before joining the second team of Athletic Bilbao ( Bilbao Athletic ) in 1991 (including playing there with Julen Guerrero ). In 1992, coach Jupp Heynckes appointed him to the first team, for which he played 118 times. Karanka followed his mentor Heynckes to Real Madrid in 1997 , where he won the UEFA Champions League three times ( 1997/98 , 1999/2000 and 2001/02 ) and played 33 CL games. Furthermore he celebrated a championship title ( 2000/01 ) and two victories in the Supercup (1997, 2001) with the capital city . He returned to Athletic Bilbao in 2002 and immediately became a regular again. In 2006 he moved to the Colorado Rapids in the MLS and played there until the end of the season.
As a national player, Karanka was never able to establish himself and came only to one use for Spain, but completed 14 games for the U-21s and took part in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . He also played five times for the Basque football team .
After his active career, Karanka moved to the coaching staff of the Spanish Association , where he was in charge of the U-15 and U-16 national teams from 2008 to 2010. In June 2010, he took the post of assistant coach at Real Madrid alongside José Mourinho . On November 14, 2013 he took over his first head coach at the English second division club Middlesbrough FC . In the 2015/16 season he rose with the club in the Premier League . On March 16, 2017, the association announced the dismissal of Karanka. Middlesbrough was relegated to a relegation zone after 27 games. In January 2018 he was introduced as the new head coach at the second division Nottingham Forest , where he asked a year later in mid-January 2019 in seventh place in the table to terminate his contract, which was complied with by the club. At the end of July 2020, he took over the second division club Birmingham City for the 2020/21 season .
