Julen Guerrero López [ 'ʝulen ge'reɾo' lopeθ ] (born January 7, 1974 in Portugalete , Biscaya , Spain ) is a former Spanish professional footballer who was active for Athletic Bilbao , Spain and the Basque football team .

Club career

Guerrero has played for Athletic Bilbao since he was eight and has played through all of the club's youth teams. His breakthrough began in the 1991/92 season when he was able to achieve six goals in twelve games for the second team in the Segunda División .

On September 6, 1992 he made his professional debut under coach Jupp Heynckes in the first team of Bilbao. Guerrero quickly developed into the team's central figure, scoring 28 goals in 73 games as a midfielder in his first two years. His achievements were rewarded with the election of the best young player of the Primera División in 1993 and a year later the best player of the 1994 season. That season he had scored a hat-trick against Albacete Balompié and scored four goals in the game against Sporting Gijón . So he became the new captain and star of the team from the Basque Country.

Guerrero's achievements made him interesting for other clubs, such as Real Madrid , FC Barcelona , Lazio Rome , Juventus Turin and Manchester United . However, he remained loyal to his hometown club, turned down all offers and signed a ten-year contract with Bilbao in 1995. This is the longest contract in the club's history and it made Guerrero a top earner. In 2002 Guerrero lost his regular place under the new coach Luis Fernández , but he remained the crowd favorite and symbol of the club despite his weaker performance.

In total, Guerrero played 14 seasons in the first team of Athletic Bilbao and came to 372 league games and 101 goals. In the European Cup he was active 17 times and scored four goals. On July 11, 2006, he announced his resignation at a press conference and has since worked in the youth sector in Bilbao.

International career

At the age of only 19, Guerrero made his international debut for Spain on January 27, 1993 against Mexico . In total, he came to 41 games (13 goals) for his country and took part in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and the 1996 Euro .

His personal highlights include his hat tricks against Malta and Cyprus .
