Liga Mayor del Distrito Federal 1938/39
The 1938/39 season was the eighth season of the Liga Mayor del Distrito Federal , which had had this name since 1931, as well as - taking into account that the competition was prematurely terminated in the 1930/31 season and should therefore not be regarded as a regular league competition like the anniversary tournament Centenario 1921 - the 36th season of the soccer league introduced in Mexico, which initially operated under the name Primera Fuerza . While the competition was originally open to teams from all parts of the country, in the 20 years from 1920 to 1940 it was limited to clubs from Mexico City .
CF Asturias became champions for the second time after 1923 , but they paid dearly for the championship title, as their club-owned stadium was set on fire immediately after the meeting with defending champion Necaxa on March 26, 1939 , and burned down to the foundations.
Due to the raging civil war in Spain , a regional selection from the Basque Country went on an extensive trip abroad, which took them to Mexico in 1938. There she was invited to take part in the games for the championship of the Federal District, where she competed (once in the 1938/39 season) under the name Club Deportivo Euzkadi . Euzkadi played his first game in the Mexican league on November 27, 1938 against Club América and won 3-2. The last meeting took place on May 7, 1939 and was lost 7-2 to Real Club España .

1 The game between América and Asturias on December 11, 1938 was abandoned in the 88th minute when the score was 1-1 after the Club América team had left the pitch in protest due to controversial referee decisions. The match was then rated 0: 1 in favor of CF Asturias.
2 Following the encounter between Asturias and Necaxa on March 26, 1939, disputed referee decisions led to tumults on the part of the Necaxa fans who set fire to the wooden stands they had populated. As a result, the fire spread over the entire stadium, so that the Parque Asturias burned down.
