Friday 1st January
- Isle of Portland / United Kingdom : In the wake of the First World War , the sunk German submarine SM U-24 , the HMS Formidable , a battleship of the Royal Navy . 547 crew members lose their lives.
Saturday January 2nd
- Kingdom of Italy : The dioceses of Nocera Umbra and Gualdo Tadino , founded in the 5th century, are combined to form the diocese of Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino . About 70 years later, on September 30, 1986, the diocese was again amalgamated with the diocese of Assisi to form the diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino .
- Mesopotamia : At the Mesopotamian campaign , a sideshow of the First World War , takes Süleyman Askeri Bey command of the Ottoman troops . Since the army's resources for another front were lacking, he wrote letters to the Arab sheikhs in order to win them over to the Ottoman Empire . His goal is to retake the Shatt al-Arab at any cost.
Sunday January 3rd
- German Empire : The SMS Regensburg is put into service.
- German Empire: Due to his work as an interpreter in the French army and public declarations on the side of France during the First World War , Georges Weill is withdrawn from the Reichstag (for the constituency of the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine ). He had previously lost his citizenship .
- Spain : Basque football team play their first game. She wins against the selection of Catalonia 6: 1. Up to 1916 there were a total of six repetitions of this part, which was not reprinted until 1930 and 1931.
Tuesday 5th January
- German Empire : The Federal Council publishes the announcement about the preparation of baked goods , in which it says in § 9: “ All work that serves to prepare baked goods is in bakeries and confectioneries, even if these are only a secondary operation, in the time Prohibited from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. ". This is the first time a night baking ban is introduced. The regulation is intended to reduce the production of baked goods and thus stretch the grain stocks.
- Caucasus : In the battle of Sarıkamış , which has been taking place since December 22, 1914 , the remaining units of the 3rd Army of the Armed Forces of the Ottoman Empire retreat. Your current commander Enver Pascha hands over the leadership of the remaining units in Sarıkamış to Hafız Hakkı Pascha and his resignation as commander of the 3rd Army takes place on January 8th .
- Minnesota / United States : Adolph Olson Eberhart hands over the governor of Minnesota to Winfield Scott Hammond . However, he was unable to implement his plans - such as women's suffrage - because he died on December 30th that same year.
Thursday January 7th
- Vermont / United States : Charles W. Gates takes over as governor of the state from Allen M. Fletcher . This means that a constitutional amendment will come into force after the terms of the Vermont governors begin in January and no longer in October.
- Kingdom of Italy : The country's air force is renamed from Corpo Aeronautico to Corpo Aeronautico Militare .
Friday January 8th
- Ottoman Empire : Enver Pascha hands over command of the 3rd Army to Hafız Hakkı Pascha . The reason for this are the heavy defeats in the Battle of Sarıkamış . Hafız Hakkı fell ill with typhus - like many of his soldiers - and died of it just under a month later, on February 15, in the hospital in Erzurum .
Saturday January 9th
- Sultanate of Egypt : Henry McMahon takes over the post of British High Commissioner from Milne Cheetham , who has held him provisionally since the proclamation of the Sultanate on December 19, 1914 .
- Champagne / France : The French armed forces begin a strong attack against the section of the German 16th Division east of Perthes. Among other things, the 1st regiment d'infanterie is involved , which occupies the grove of Beauséjour.
- Bombay / British India : The Indian philosopher and Nobel laureate in literature Rabindranath Tagore greets Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on his arrival after his stay in South Africa with the Sanskrit honorary name Mahatma ( महात्मा mahātmā , "great soul").
- Austria-Hungary : Urged by the ambassadors in Rome , Bernhard von Bülow and Karl Macchio , Foreign Minister Leopold Berchtold proposes to Emperor Franz Joseph I that Trentino be ceded to the Kingdom of Italy . The Emperor and the Hungarian Prime Minister Stephan Tisza do not want to know anything about it. Four days later, on January 13, Berchtold is replaced as Foreign Minister by the Hungarian Stephan Burián at the instigation of Tisza .
Tuesday January 12th
- Oregon / United States : James Withycombe is inducted into the office of governor . He replaces Oswald West , who had no longer sought a second term.
- Colorado / United States: George Alfred Carlson becomes the new governor of the state. During his two-year term in office, he introduced some reforms in labor law, which have become necessary, especially in the mining industry, due to the many strikes and unrest in recent years.
- France - German Empire : The III. Army Corps , a large unit of the Prussian Army , repulses strong French attacks north of Soissons . Two days later, on January 14, the commandant of the association, Ewald von Lochow , was awarded the Pour le Mérite order by Wilhelm II in recognition of this .
- Mafia / German East Africa : British units, including the auxiliary warship Adjutant , occupy the island to prevent the German cruiser SMS Königsberg from breaking out of the river delta.
