Before the start of the tournament, it was determined that in addition to the defending champions India, the teams of North Korea and Tajikistan would also qualify for the finals. The remaining 17 teams had to contest a qualifying round. The teams were divided into four groups of four teams each in a draw. The winners of the groups and the best second-placed team qualified for the final round. India competes in the tournament with an U-23 selection.
The group stage draw on November 30, 2009 at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo resulted in the following groups:
Group A | Group B |
---|---|
Tajikistan | India |
Myanmar | North Korea |
Sri Lanka | Turkmenistan |
Bangladesh | Kyrgyzstan |
Games and results
Preliminary round
Four teams each compete in two groups (A and B) in the championship system, ie each team plays once against each other team in the group. In the group stage, a win counts three, a draw counts one point, a defeat counts no points. In the table of the respective group, the points were added.
In the event of a tie between two teams, the table position and progress will be decided in the following order: the direct encounters between the teams concerned (higher number of points, goal difference, goals scored), goal difference and higher number of goals scored from all group matches and finally the lot.
