Jo Tong-sop (born May 1, 1959 in Pyongyang ) is a former North Korean soccer player and current coach of the North Korean national soccer team .

Career as a player

As a player, Jo was part of the North Korean football selection in 1986, with which he could win the King's Cup , the opponent Aarhus GF could be defeated 2-1. Jo was active as a soccer player for 20 years.

Career as a coach

Jo was the coach of the North Korean U-17, U-20 and U-23. He led North Korea's U-19s to their third victory in the 2010 U-19 Asian Cup . He also won the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup with the senior national team , back then as an assistant .

His first game as head coach was a friendly against Kuwait , which was lost. His first win came in a 1-0 win over Qatar . The soccer Asian Cup 2011 was disappointing, as Jo's team could only get one point and were eliminated in the preliminary round. Things went similarly badly at the 2015 Asian Football Championship , where North Korea was also eliminated in the preliminary round. Jo was subsequently removed from office and replaced by Kim Chang-bok .
