Brian Carroll (born July 20, 1981 in Springfield , Virginia ) is a retired American football player .
Club career
Carroll played from 2000 to 2002 at Wake Forest University in college soccer and was selected in the MLS SuperDraft 2003 in the 2nd round in 11th place overall by DC United . In his first season under coach Ray Hudson Carrol was not yet in the Major League Soccer and played for some time in the farm team Richmond Kickers . It was only under Hudson's successor Piotr Nowak that Carroll moved into the line-up and was used in all 30 games in the 2004 season . In the subsequent championship playoffs, Carroll was in the starting line-up in all four games and won the championship with the team by beating the Kansas City Wizards 3-2 .
In the following years, the defensive player was one of the regulars at DC United, his younger brothers Pat and Jeff Carroll also made a few appearances at United during this time. After the 2007 season he was selected by the San José Earthquakes in the MLS Expansion Draft and a short time later given in exchange for Kei Kamara to Columbus Crew . With Columbus, under coach Sigi Schmid , he finished the regular season 2008 as the best point team and then prevailed in the play-offs against the competitors, in the final a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls ensured the first championship title of Columbus and the second for Carroll.
He has been in Major League Soccer for the Philadelphia Union since 2011 . In the 2013 season he was named team captain.
National team
Carroll took part with the US U-20 selection at the 2001 World Youth Championship in Argentina and failed there with the team in the round of 16 against Egypt. At the beginning of 2004 he took part with the Olympic selection (U-23) in the continental qualifying tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics , but after a 4-0 defeat against Mexico in the semifinals they missed participation in the Olympics.
In 2005 he made his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Panama in the US national team . As a result, he was used several times in friendly matches.
