Career

society

Robinson began his football career at the then second division Wolverhampton Wanderers , where he signed a professional contract in 1995. To get more game practice, the Welshman was loaned to Shrewsbury Town for the following season . With these he reached the final of the Football League Trophy in 1996 . In the game against Rotherham United, however, the club lost 2-1. After Robinson returned, he came on regular assignments with the Wanderers. 1996/97 the club reached the play-off round for promotion to the Premier League , but where they failed in the semifinals. Year after year, the Wolves missed the re-qualification for the highest English football class. It was not until 2001/02 that they placed themselves in third place, which made it possible to move into the promotion round, but the club missed this after a loss to Norwich City .

In the summer of 2002 Robinson decided to change clubs and transferred to league rivals Portsmouth FC . With these he won the second division and rose to the Premier League in 2003. However, he could not contribute much to this achievement. Between 2003 and 2004, the midfielder was loaned to five different clubs. So also at Sunderland AFC . Robinson convinced there and signed a three-year contract with First Division participants in 2004. With the AFC , the Welshman won the second division for the second time in his career, where he was an important player in promotion as a regular player. But in the Premier League Robinson had it difficult again and was therefore loaned to the lower class club Norwich City before he finally signed there in 2006.

On January 31, 2007, he moved away from the island and Robinson moved to North America to the newly formed Toronto FC . He quickly rose to become a top performer and fan favorite at the Canadian club. In his first year at TFC , club supporters voted him the club's Most Valuable Player . The following year this award was confirmed and Robinson received it for the second time. The midfielder won the Canadian Championship with Toronto in 2009 . In March 2010, Robinson and his teammate Greg Sutton moved to the USA for the New York Red Bulls . There he is on his team with players like the former Barcelona players Rafael Márquez and Thierry Henry , as well as Juan Pablo Ángel and Bouna Coundoul .

National team

From 1999 to 2009 Robinson played for the Welsh senior team . Before that, he was already in the squad of youth teams. He made his debut in 1999 against a Belarusian selection . In April 2009, after Wales failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup , he announced that he would end his national team career. The midfielder played his last game in Welsh dress on March 28, 2009 in the World Cup qualifying match against Finland .
