The steam locomotive series SB 17 , SB 17 b , SB 17c and SB 17d were fast - Tender Locomotive ranks of the Austrian Southern Railway .

The SB 17a series

In 1881 the Südbahn needed more powerful express locomotives. The Floridsdorf locomotive factory delivered ten of the series 17a machines in 1882  . They were given the company numbers 302-311 . In contrast to 16a , the last coupling axle was no longer behind, but under the fire box. The machines, like the 17b, 17c and 17d, had outer frames, Hall cranks, Stephenson controls and vacuum brakes and were therefore rather antiquated for their time.

The 17a reached 115 km / h on the plane, with a train weight of 150 t the required 80 km / h. They were initially used for express trains Vienna - Trieste . When they were replaced there by the 17b, 17c and 17d, they were transferred to Kanizsa , from where they hauled the express trains Budapest - Pragerhof and Kanizsa - Ödenburg - Vienna , as well as to Bozen and Lienz .

After 1924 two machines came to Hungary , eight to the railways of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS).

When the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (KsOd) needed express locomotives, Floridsdorf delivered ten of these types, which had been tried and tested on the Südbahn between 1884 and 1891. The KsOd assigned them the series designation I and the company numbers 31-40. For the KsOd these were the first real express locomotives. In 1924 they were taken over by the Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD as 253.1 .

The series SB 17b and 17c

17c372

The rows 17b and 17c were stronger variants of the row 17a. The Floridsdorf locomotive factory initially delivered 14 units of the series 17b machines in 1884  . They received the road numbers 312-325 . In 1890 another five pieces followed ( 328–332 ). The road numbers 326 and 327 were further variants that were already assigned to the 17c series  . 62 of this series had been built by 1901. It was the standard passenger locomotive of the Southern Railway. In addition to the two machines mentioned above, they had the numbers 372–431 . In addition to Floridsdorf, they were also built by the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik and in Budapest .

The machines of this series were stationed in Vienna, Marburg , Trieste and Kanizsa.

After 1924, six of the 17b series came to Italy as the FS 542 series  . The rest of them formed the BBÖ series  103 . The two prototypes of the 17c series became the 403 series at the BBÖ  . The remaining row 17c was BBÖ  503.01-23 , JD® row  103 and DSA / MÁV  226.001-021 . Some of the MÁV machines came to JDŽ after 1945 , and one to ČSD for a short time . Seven of the BBÖ locomotives were sold to the Graz-Köflacher Eisenbahn (GKB) in 1924–1927 ; they were given the numbers  372 , 398–400 , 403 , 406 , 409 and 415 .

The BBÖ withdrew their machines in the 1930s, the MÁV had a few machines in use until 1950.

The SB 17d series

While the machines of the 17b and 17c series were being delivered, the Floridsdorf locomotive factory built four much more powerful units, which were designated as the 17d series  . They were handed over to the Südbahn in 1888 (one piece) and 1890 (three pieces), which assigned them the numbers 351–354 . All four locomotives were stationed in Vienna, became BBÖ 603.01-04 after 1924  and were in use until 1930.
