The Čadca – Zwardoń railway line is a main line in Slovakia and Poland . It branches off the railway line (Košice–) Žilina – Bohumín in Čadca and consists largely of a route to the Polish railway network that climbs steeply into the Beskids .
history
The railway line was opened on November 3, 1884 by the Hungarian State Railways (MAV). However, the management took over the private Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (Ks.Od.) for the account of the owner.
In 1938, Poland occupied large parts of the railway line in the course of the Czechoslovak-Polish border conflicts , in 1939 they came back to Slovakia, but were again occupied by Poles in 1945 and only returned in 1947. The line was badly affected by these events and the Second World War and was initially only rebuilt as far as Skalité-Serafínov. The cross-border route was only re-established in 1991 and the first train crossed the border on June 1, 1992. Electrification work was completed in 2002 after the Polish connection line was electrified at the end of 1986.
Today there are several local trains, domestic trains to Žilina, Liptovský Mikuláš and Poprad-Tatry, and international trains from Žilina to Katowice and Cracow. Freight traffic is of great importance.
