Rhoshii Shepperd Wells (born December 30, 1976 in Austin , Texas , † August 11, 2008 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American boxer . He won the Olympic bronze medal in the middleweight division in 1996 and was the world championship challenger of the WBA in the light middleweight division in 2003 and 2005 .

Amateur career

The counter boxer began boxing at the age of eleven and became the American junior light middleweight champion in 1994. In the same year he took part in the light middleweight division at the 8th Junior World Championship in Istanbul . There he won in the preliminary round by knockout in the second round against the Iranian Nader Asghari, but then retired in the quarterfinals just on points (8: 9) against the Russian Andrei Balanow .

In 1995 he was after a controversial disqualification in the final of the United States National Championships , US runner-up and won the eliminations for participation in the 12th Pan American Games , in which he could not compete due to an injury.

In a country comparison match against Germany in May 1996, he lost on points against Sven Ottke . In the same year he won the bronze medal at the US Olympic Festival .

At the 26th Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 , he won the bronze medal in the middleweight division. He defeated the Iranian Korosh Dashti and the Brazilian José Rodrigues in the preliminary rounds, as well as the Uzbek Dilshod Yorbekov in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals he lost to Cuban Ariel Hernández on points and landed on 3rd place.

During his amateur days he was managed by his father and funded by Evander Holyfield .

Professional career

In 1997 he moved to the professional camp and won his debut on July 27th unanimously on points against Cordell Parker, whom he defeated again in April 2000. On October 10, 1997, he boxed a draw against eventual Minnesota champions Anthony Bonsante. On September 26, 1998 he won by knockout in the eighth round against the eventual North America champion and world championship challenger Robert Koon. A few weeks later he defeated the undefeated (5-0, 4 Ko's) Charles Ward by knockout in the second round.

He then won against the multiple North American champions and world championship challengers Anthony Jones (points win), Ángel Hernández (knockout) and Kenny Ellis (points win). On May 11, 2002, he boxed against Johnny Rivera in Puerto Rico ; the fight ended in the second round with a technical draw, as Rivera suffered a cut injury due to an accidental headbutt by Wells, with which he could not continue boxing.

After knockout victories against Bernard Gray (24-8) and Leonard Townsend (37-10), he qualified for a fight for the WBA world title in the light middleweight division against the also undefeated Alejandro García (21-0). The fight on September 20, 2003 in Uncasville , Connecticut , he lost on points, however, by technical knockout in the tenth round.

On September 4, 2004, he won on points against the former WBA world champion Santiago Samaniego and got the chance to win the WBA world championship against Alejandro García again. But also this duel on May 21, 2005 in Chicago , he lost to a technical knockout in the ninth round.

He then retired from active boxing, but after a few years began to prepare for a comeback for financial reasons. This should begin in 2007 with his participation in the 3rd season of the reality TV series "The Contender", but he was eliminated from the series before the start of the competitions. He lived in Las Vegas with his girlfriend and six children, ages three months to eleven.

Rhoshii Shepperd Wells was shot dead in front of his four-year-old son in his neighborhood on August 11, 2008. The crime is said to have been preceded by a verbal argument between Wells and a 26-year-old. After escaping for two days, the perpetrator was arrested at a traffic control and confessed to the crime, the murder weapon was found in his apartment.

When he said goodbye at Calvary Southern Baptist Church and then buried him at Woodlawn Cemetery in Las Vegas, hundreds of people attended, including a delegation from the city council. The perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment in February 2012, among other things for murder.
