Stolické vrchy on the map of the Inner Western Carpathians (highlighted in red)

The Stolické vrchy (German roughly: Stolica Mountains) is an approximately 600 km² mountain range and the highest part of the Slovak Ore Mountains in central Slovakia and thus part of the Inner Western Carpathians . It borders the Veporské vrchy in the north, Muránska planina in the northeast, Volovské vrchy in the extreme east and Revúcka pahorkatina in the south. All of these are also part of the Slovak Ore Mountains. To the west of the Stolické vrchy are the Krupinská planina highlands , the Zvolenská kotlina basin and the Poľana mountains . The highest point is the Stolica ( 1476  m nm ), which is also the highest point of the Slovak Ore Mountains.

The mountain range is divided into four smaller geomorphological parts:

  • Stolica
  • Tŕstie
  • Klenovské vrchy
  • Málinské vrchy

Thanks to the rich resources of raw materials in the Middle Ages, some mining settlements or small mining towns such as Kokava nad Rimavicou arose in the area . On the higher ridges lie dense forests, mainly spruce , further down the valley, beech , oak and hornbeam . Significant rivers are the upper reaches of the Slaná in the east, Muráň in the center and Rimava in the west.
