Hornonitrianska kotlina
The Hornonitrianska kotlina (German about Ober-Neutra-Talessel or Oberneutraer Talessel ) is a valley basin in Slovakia on the upper course of the Nitra (German Neutra ) and part of the Fatra-Tatra region within the Western Carpathians . The basin borders the following mountains: Little Fatra in the north, Žiar in the east, Kremnicky mountains in the south-east, Vtáčnik in the south and Strážovské vrchy in the west and north-west; the foothills of the Danube hill country join only towards the southwest . The largest town in the basin is Prievidza (45,634 inhabitants); administratively it belongs to the Trenčiansky kraj and mainly to the subordinate Okres Prievidza .
The height ranges from 250 m nm in the south to 400 m nm in the north. The only big river is the Nitra, important tributaries are the Handlovka (mouth near Koš ) and Nitrica (mouth near Partizánske ). Beeches and oaks grow in the remaining forests, and spruces in coniferous forests.
Significant brown coal and lignite mines are located near Cigeľ , Handlová and Nováky ; There is also a coal-fired power plant and a chemical plant in the latter location . Because of this, pollution , particularly dust , has been a longstanding problem.
A well-known tourist place is the town of Bojnice with the castle , zoo and as a health resort .
