WiBro ( Wi reless Bro adband, Korean : 와이브로, IEEE 802.16e , mobile WiMAX ) is a wireless communication standard developed by the South Korean telecommunications industry. In February 2002, the responsible authority licensed 100 MHz in the 2.3 GHz band. At the end of 2004, phase 1 of WiBro was standardized by the Korean TTA ( Telecommunications Technology Association ).

WiBro is organized in a star shape and enables a theoretical data throughput of 30 to a maximum of 50 Mbit / s within a radius of 1 to 5 km around the base station . As with many standards for wireless data transmission, the connection quality can be increased at the expense of the transmission speed. This uses, for example, the uninterrupted transmission of video streams .

Two Korean telecom companies (KT, SKT) have been offering this type of service since June 2006 for $ 30 / month.

Radio transmission types

The new IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard also specifies a radio transmission method for frequencies up to 6 GHz. This is what is known as SOFDMA , in which the quality of the transmission path and the computing power of mobile devices can be taken into account. This is done by additionally splitting the frequency spectrum to different receivers and by changing the type of modulation of the subcarriers. In addition, IEEE 802.16e-2005 offers the option of changing the radio cell during operation ( handover ). IEEE 802.16e-2005 is not an extension of the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard , but is incompatible with it.

Spectral efficiency

For a 10 MHz channel, the IEEE 802.16e-2005 (Mobile WiMax) standard results in a maximum data reception rate for all end devices of 46 Mbit / s when the frequency band is divided in a ratio of 3 to 1 for reception and transmission. All end devices can still send data simultaneously with a maximum of 4 Mbit / s over the same 10 MHz channel. The specified data rates require MIMO technology. The spectral efficiency is thus higher than with the UMTS extension HSDPA .

history

In November 2004, a compatibility of WiBro with WiMAX was agreed by representatives of the companies Intel and LG Electronics .

At the beginning of 2005, the companies SK Telecom and Hanaro Telecom signed a partnership for the nationwide development of a WiBro infrastructure, which is to supplement the regional networks already planned in Seoul and six other provincial cities.

At the end of 2005 WiBro was standardized by the ITU as IEEE 802.16e , mobile WiMAX.
