The Southeast Asian Football Championship 2016 (officially AFF Championship 2016 , also called AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 for sponsorship reasons ) was the eleventh edition of the tournament and took place from November 19 to December 17, 2016 in Myanmar and the Philippines . The two countries hosted the group stage for the first time.

Eleven teams from Southeast Asia competed for the title of Southeast Asian champion. The tournament was won by the defending champion, the team from Thailand .

Venue and mode

In December 2013, Myanmar and the Philippines were announced as hosts. It is the first time the tournament has been held for both countries. In February 2016, the Philippine Football Association PFF withdrew from hosting the event because no suitable venue was available. Malaysia and the two hosts from 2014, Singapore and Vietnam, made the offer to replace them. In mid-March 2016, however, the AFF decided that the Philippines would retain the hosting rights after the PFF had reached an agreement with the Philippine Sports Stadium about a use for the tournament.

The mode had changed only slightly compared to the 2014 tournament . Initially, the four weaker teams from 2014 each played once against each other in the qualifying round. The group winners qualified for the finals, for which the stronger seven teams were already seeded.

The eight participants were divided into two groups of four teams each. The group winner and the runner-up reached the semi-finals, the winners of the semi-finals played the final. The semi-finals and the final were played in home and away games . A game for third place did not take place.

qualification

The first five games took place in the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh and the remainder of the game in the RSN Stadium in Phnom Penh ( Cambodia ). Times are given in local time ( UTC + 7 ).
