The 1996 ASEAN football championship (officially 1996 Tiger Cup ) was the first edition of the competition. The championship was hosted by Singapore . All Southeast Asian national soccer teams that belonged to the ASEAN Football Federation are eligible to participate .

The football tournament took place in Singapore from September 1 to September 15, 1996. The participating countries were:
The game was played in two groups of five teams each. The group winners and runners-up met in the semi-finals, the winners of the semi-finals then determined the winner of the 1996 ASEAN championship. The semi-final losers played off the tournament third.
