The Olympic Stadium ( National Sports Complex ) in a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh was built between 1962 and 1964. The stadium's architect is Vann Molyvann , who is also responsible for many other buildings in the city.

The stadium is located in a sports complex that includes a football stadium with 50,000 seats, a badminton hall, a ballroom and a swimming pool. The facility is located at the intersection of Charles de Gaulle Blvd. and Sihanouk Blvd.

The stadium was originally intended for the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1963, which, however, did not even take place at the time due to political problems in Cambodia. In 1966 the Olympic Stadium was the venue for the GANEFO ( Games Of The New Emerging Forces ). It also played a role in qualifying for the Football World Cup in 1966 , when Australia and North Korea played their home and away games there due to the extensive political isolation of North Korea.

In November 2007, the national volleyball teams for the disabled held their world championships in the ball sports hall.

During the civil war , the stadium was rededicated as a military base; It was from here that the last helicopters of the US operation Eagle Pull left Phnom Penh shortly before the invasion of the Khmer Rouge . After the city was taken over, the stadium was briefly used for military parades.

The Olympic Games, however, have never been held in Phnom Penh. Today the facility is in a dilapidated condition. Still, it is widely used by the locals.

A restoration of the complex is often considered. However, due to a lack of financial resources, these plans have always been rejected.
