Vann Molyvann

Vann Molyvann (born November 23, 1926 - † September 28, 2017 ) was a Cambodian architect who significantly influenced the appearance of the capital Phnom Penh in the 1950s to 1970s.

Life

After gaining independence in 1952, King Norodom Sihanouk wanted to convert his capital into a new metropolis. To this end, he appointed young Khmer architects such as Vann Molyvann, who had studied in Paris under Le Corbusier . He was appointed national architect by the king in 1956.

Molyvann developed his own style together with other Cambodian architects, which can be described as a mixture of Bauhaus , post-modernism and the tradition of Angkor .

During the terror of the Khmer Rouge , he fled into exile in Switzerland and did not return until the 1990s. After that he held the post of minister of culture for a while.
