Rolf Isermann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rolf Isermann (* 20th August 1938 in Stuttgart ) is a German engineer and professor of control engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Life

Rolf Isermann studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart and passed the diploma examination in 1962. In 1965 he received his doctorate in engineering. at the same university with the dissertation The dynamic behavior of overheating when taking into account the coupling with other parts of a steam generator . In 1968 Isermann completed his habilitation with the thesis The dynamic control behavior of steam-heated heat exchangers at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart .

In 1971 Isermann was a visiting professor at Purdue University in Indiana, USA . In 1972 he became a private lecturer and in 1974 professor for control engineering at the University of Stuttgart. In 1977 Isermann accepted an appointment as successor to Winfried Oppelt at the - then still - Technical University of Darmstadt . From then on, until his retirement in 2006 he represented in Darmstadt the field control technology and process automation in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

From 1988 to 2001 Isermann was the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 241 Integrated Mechanical-Electronic Systems funded by the German Research Foundation . In 1998, Isermann was visiting professor in the mechanical engineering department at the University of California at Berkeley . Rolf Isermann retired in 2006, but is still scientifically active.

Act

Isermann's scientific work is dedicated to both theoretical and practical aspects of control engineering. Theoretical research focuses on the modeling of the dynamic behavior of technical systems , the application of new methods in adaptive control, and the error detection and diagnosis of technical systems . The connection is guaranteed on issues of practice by picking up on current control engineering problems relating to such diverse areas as actuators , three-phase machines , refrigerators , motor vehicles , power plants , oil and gas pipelines , pumps, robots , dryers , combustion engines , heat pumps , Heat exchangers , rolling mills and machine tools .

In his academic career, Isermann has supervised over 100 doctoral theses - an extremely seldom reached number in engineering. Isermann had supervised the first five doctoral theses at the University of Stuttgart. A further 95 dissertations followed at the Technical University of Darmstadt. 70 percent of Isermann's research is financed by third-party funds, of which a third is through cooperation agreements with industry. From 1977 to 2006, Isermann's department raised a total of almost 40 million euros in third-party funding.
