The Algerian national soccer team took part for the first time in the qualification for the Olympic Games in 1968 and was able to qualify for the first time for the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 and at least reach the quarter-finals there. Players from this team also took part in the World Cup in Spain two years later , where they surprisingly won 2-1 in the first game against European champions Germany and only missed the second round due to the non-aggression pact of Gijón . After that, the 2015 qualification for the next year's games in Rio de Janeiro succeeded . Until 1988, the senior national team played the qualifying games for the Olympic Games. Since the 2012 Games, qualification has been run through the African U-23 championship .

  • For the 1968 Olympic Games, Algeria had reported a team for the first time that did not have to intervene until the second round of qualifying:

Algeria was thus qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time and was the only one of the three African teams that qualified not to join the Olympic boycott because of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan .
