Career

In the club

AS Roma

Daniele De Rossi started his career at AS Ostiamare, where he played in storm . In 2000 he moved to the youth team at AS Roma . He made his debut for the first team of coach Fabio Capello on October 10, 2001 in the Champions League game against RSC Anderlecht . In the following season 2002/03 he came on January 25, 2003 against Como Calcio for his Serie A debut . On May 10, 2003 he was in the 3-1 home win against Torino Calcio for the first time in the Giallorossi's starting line-up and scored the interim 2-0. De Rossi also scored in his next outing against Atalanta Bergamo .

In the next few seasons he was able to establish himself as a regular in the central midfield and was considered one of the most promising Italian talents in Serie A. De Rossi played a significant role in the Roma’s runner-up title in the 2003/04 season and in the finals of the Coppa Italia 2005 and 2006 , both of which were lost to Inter Milan . Despite his young age, Daniele De Rossi already stood out for his maturity, perseverance and leadership skills. Therefore, on March 15, 2006 for the UEFA Cup game against FC Middlesbrough was designated for the first time as captain of his team. At the end of the 2005/06 season he was named the best young player in Italy .

In the 2006/07 season, De Rossi one of the major players remained in the team of Roma. In the 3-1 win against Fiorentina on November 5, 2006, he overcame Fiorentina's goalkeeper Sébastien Frey with a long-range shot from over 35 meters. He scored the only goal for his team in the devastating 7-1 away defeat in the second leg of the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester United . On May 9, 2007, De Rossi met with his team in the final of the Coppa Italia 2006/07 again on the rivals Inter Milan. He scored in the 6-2 home win in the first leg. Despite a 1: 2 away defeat at the San Siro , he was able to celebrate his first title won with his team.

In the following 2007/08 season you defeated the champions of the previous season Inter Milan in the Supercoppa , in which De Rossi scored the only goal of the day from a penalty. With Roma he met Internazionale for the fourth time in a row in the final of the Coppa Italia 2007/08 and successfully defended the title at home with a 2-1 win at the Stadio Olimpico . In the league, however, the team of coach Luciano Spalletti had to admit defeat the Nerazzurri and reached 2nd place in the table. De Rossi made 51 appearances across all competitions, in which he scored six goals and prepared three more.

The Supercoppa could not be defended in the next 2008/09 season , as they lost to champions Inter Milan 8: 7 (2: 2 after extra time) on penalties. During the regular season, De Rossi managed the interim 1.1 equalizer and also used his penalty kick on penalties. On April 11, 2009, he scored his first goal in the Derby della Capitale in a 4-2 win against city rivals Lazio Rome . After the strong previous season, AS Roma only ranked 6th in the league and failed in the Coppa Italia 2008/09 in the quarter-finals against rivals Inter. Thanks to his strong performances for the club, he was named Italy's Footballer of the Year 2009 .

In the city derby against Lazio on December 6, 2009 during the 2009/10 season , De Rossi played his 200th Serie A appearance for Roma. Even under new coach Claudio Ranieri , he remained the key player in midfield, unbeaten in 24 consecutive games this season. During this time he scored an important goal in a 2-1 home win against Inter Milan on March 27, 2010. In the end, however, this victory was not enough in the race for the championship title and De Rossi had to bow to two internazionale points with his Giallorossi . Also in the final of the Coppa Italia 2009/10 they met their rivals of recent years, but had to admit defeat to the Milanese for the third time in the final. He came in 49 missions this season to 19 points, consisting of 11 goals and 8 assists.

In the following season 2010/11 the Romans weakened. The Supercoppa was lost again against Inter Milan, in the league they had to be content with the 6th place in the table and in the Coppa Italia 2010/11 the semifinals were also the end of the line. The performances of Daniele De Rossi remained at the strong level of previous years and he was named Italy's Sportsman of the Year 2010 by the Foreign Press Association on February 4th 2011 alongside swimmer Federica Pellegrini .

In February 2012 De Rossi signed a new five-year contract with the capital club. The new club president Thomas R. DiBenedetto made him the best-paid Italian football player with an annual salary of 10 million euros. Under coach Luis Enrique he ended the 2011/12 season with 32 appearances in which he was able to score four goals.

In the 2012/13 season De Rossi lost under coach Zdeněk Zeman the status of the indispensable regular player. He was openly critical of his performance, but did not survive the season as a coach. His successor Aurelio Andreazzoli relied on the experienced midfielder again, but he ended the season for the first time since 2003/04 without a goal. Roma finished the season in 6th place in the table and did not qualify for international business.

The 2013/14 season under the new coach Rudi Garcia began with ten wins in the first ten league games. De Rossi scored in the first game of the season against AS Livorno . After veteran Francesco Totti was out for weeks at the end of October due to a tendon injury, De Rossi took over the captain's loop. On November 10, 2013, De Rossi completed his 318th league game for AS Roma in the 1-1 draw against US Sassuolo , drawing level with Roma legend Giuseppe Giannini . This mission was also his 400th competitive game in the Giallorossi jersey . In the first defeat of the season on the 18th matchday against Juventus Turin , he was sent off with a straight red in the 75th minute of the game, after a gross foul against Giorgio Chiellini . In May 2014, De Rossi climbed to third place in the ranking of most league appearances for the Roma when he overtook two-time world champion champion Guido Masetti . Roma secured the runner-up title at the end of the season, 17 points behind champions Juventus. In the Coppa Italia 2013/14 they failed in the semi-finals at SSC Napoli . De Rossi ended the season with one goal in 36 competitive appearances.

In the following season 2014/15 they were runner-up behind Juventus Turin. De Rossi shot his team in the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia 2014/15 against FC Empoli with a converted penalty in extra time. There it was over against Fiorentina and also in the UEFA Europa League 2014/15 they failed in the round of 16 on the viola .

On October 17, 2015, De Rossi scored a goal in a 3-1 home win against FC Empoli in his 500th outing for AS Roma in all competitions. Three days later, he scored twice in the 4-4 draw in the group stage of the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League against Bayer 04 Leverkusen . After surviving the group stage there in second place, they were eliminated in the round of 16 at the eventual winner Real Madrid . In the league they placed third in the table. De Rossi came this season also due to calf problems to only 31 missions in which he scored three goals.

In the following season 2016/17 he and his team failed in the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League 2016/17 at Olympique Lyon . Since long-time captain Francesco Totti was only used sporadically in his last season as a professional footballer, De Rossi wore the captain's armband in most of the games. At the end of the season he became an important factor in the Roma team in the fight for the Champions League places in Serie A. He only scored his first league goal on matchday 34, April 30, 2017, in the derby against Lazio, which was nevertheless lost 3-1. In the remaining four games, which were all won, he scored three more times and led his team to 2nd place in the table as captain. On May 31, he signed a new two-year treaty with the Romans.

After Totti's resignation, he was appointed as the new captain for the 2017/18 season . He scored his first goal of the season on March 9, 2018 in a 3-0 home win against FC Turin. In the Coppa Italia 2017/18 they reached the round of 16. The 2017/18 UEFA Champions League was De Rossi's most successful tournament of his career to date. The group stage was won before Chelsea and in the knockout phase they beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the round of 16 . In the quarter-finals they met the favorites FC Barcelona . The first leg in the Catalan Camp Nou was lost 4-1. Nevertheless, they made a comeback with a 3-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico at home, in which Daniele De Rossi scored a penalty goal and assisted another goal, and made it to the semi-finals for the first time, where they were eliminated by Liverpool FC . The league ended in 3rd place in the table.

In the 1-1 draw against SSC Napoli on October 28, 2018, Daniele De Rossi sustained a knee injury that made him watch until the beginning of February 2019. In May 2019, his club announced that it would not extend his contract after the 2018/19 season . De Rossi left the Romans after 18 years as a professional.

Boca Juniors

On July 26, 2019, it was announced that De Rossi had signed a one-year contract with the Argentinian first division club Boca Juniors . For family reasons, De Rossi prematurely terminated his contract, which ran until July 2020, on January 6, 2020 in order to be able to spend more time with his family in his native Italy. At the same time he declared his active football career over. However, he wants to stay in football after a break as a manager or official.

In the national team

In 2004 De Rossi was with the Italian team under coach Claudio Gentile U-21 European champion and was then also in the squad of the Olympic team, which won the bronze medal in Athens . He was also in the Italian squad that won the title under Marcello Lippi at the 2006 World Cup in Germany .

In the last group game of the European Championship in 2008 against France, De Rossi scored the 2-0 and was named man of the game .

The 2010 World Cup was catastrophic for the defending champions Italy. Behind Paraguay , Slovakia and New Zealand , they finished last in the group after two draws and one defeat and were eliminated from the tournament. De Rossi played through all games in defensive midfield and scored the equalizer against Paraguay to make it 1-1.

At the European Football Championship in 2012 he was runner- up with Italy under the coach Cesare Prandelli . De Rossi initially played in defense behind playmaker Andrea Pirlo in the first two games . The rest of the tournament he was used in the right midfield behind the strikers Mario Balotelli , Antonio Cassano and Antonio Di Natale . Despite the severe 4-0 defeat in the final against Spain , the tournament was considered a success for Italy. Because of his performance at Euro 2012, he was elected to the 23-strong UEFA All-Star team after the tournament.

In the European Championship qualification 2014/15 he played only three of the ten group games. The 1-1 draw against Croatia on November 16, 2014 was his 100th international match.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was again included in the Italian squad . In the first two games against Belgium and Sweden he was on the starting line-up and since the group win was already perfect, other players came into play in the last group game. In the round of 16 against Spain he had to be replaced a few minutes after half-time due to a hip injury and could not be used in the quarter-finals against Germany, which Italy lost on penalties.

In the following World Cup qualification , De Rossi was second in the group behind Spain with the Italian team and had to face Sweden in the play-offs . The 0-1 defeat in the first leg was his 117th and last international match, as he announced his retirement from the national team after the 0-0 second leg - in which he did not play.

Others

De Rossi's style of play has been described as tech-savvy, team-friendly and combative. He was also characterized by his headball strength.

At times he was noticed by grossly unsportsmanlike behavior, so on May 31, 2006 in a friendly against Switzerland he deliberately stepped on the thigh of Xavier Margairaz , who was lying on the ground, but was not punished by the referee. In the preliminary round game of the 2006 World Cup against the USA , Daniele De Rossi received the red card for an elbow blow against Brian McBride , who left the field covered in blood and had to be sewn with three stitches . He was then suspended for four games and was only allowed to play again in the final. The FIFA refrained from a longer ban because De Rossi apologized after the game in writing for his behavior. Only in the final against France he was eligible to play again and was substituted on for Francesco Totti in the second half . He scored a goal on penalties and became world champion with Italy.

In the Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on March 8, 2011 De Rossi fell again with an elbow blow in the face of Darijo Srna , which was not seen by referee Howard Webb and therefore not punished. On January 24, 2016, he insulted his opponent Mario Mandžukić in an inappropriate manner in the Serie A game against Juventus Turin , for which he apologized publicly.
