Gary Jennings (born September 20, 1928 in Buena Vista , Virginia , † March 13, 1999 in Pompton Lakes , New Jersey ) was an American writer .

Life

Gary Jennings worked as a copywriter after graduating from school in 1949–52 and also studied at the Art Students League of New York ; however, he never completed a regular course of study and was a self-taught writer . In the Korean War he served as a correspondent for the infantry from 1952 and was awarded the Bronze Star . After his return in 1954 he worked as a newspaper reporter and as an artist in advertising. He began writing and initially published some science fiction shorts that appeared in magazines until he quit his job, went to Mexico , and lived in San Miguel de Allende for twelve years . There he learned Spanish and was fascinated by the Aztecs , whose history and language he studied and about whom he wrote his first bestseller Aztec (1980) (and later two sequels).

Jennings has written both children's books and historical novels, for which he is particularly known. In his novels he succeeded in describing the respective epoch in detail and vividly using individual fates. For the background of his novels, he researched for years and published extensive books, often with more than 500,000 words.
