As Derby della Capitale ( German  capital derby ) is in the Italian language , the Roman derby between Mr. professional teams of AS Roma and Lazio respectively. It is also known as Derby di Roma , Derby Capitolino or Derby del Cupolone .

Beginnings

The SS (Società Sportiva) Lazio Rom was founded in 1900 by nine Romans , inspired by the Olympic Summer Games in Athens in 1896 . The football department has officially existed since 1910. The club colors white and sky blue ( Biancocelesti ) are derived from the colors of the Greek flag .

AS (Associazione Sportiva) Rome began in 1927. At that time there were eight football clubs in Rome that were represented in the first regional league. In order to join forces, Italo Foschi , then president of Fortitudo-Pro Roma , suggested merging several clubs. This should break the supremacy of the northern Italian clubs such as CFC Genoa , Inter and AC Milan , Juventus Turin or Pro Vercelli . On July 22, 1927, the AS Roma was created through the merger of the three clubs Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS , the Foot Ball Club di Roma and the SS Alba-Audace Roma . The club colors yellow and red ( Giallorossi ) were adopted by the Foot Ball Club di Roma. Lazio should also be absorbed by the new club, which ultimately prevented Giorgio Vaccaro's vehement resistance . He was a club member and later president of the Italian football association FIGC (1933 to 1942).

Stadiums and fans

Lazio- Tifosi in the Curva Nord
Roma- Tifosi in the Curva Sud

Lazio Rome was based in the Stadio della Rondinella until 1930 . The stadium was located in the immediate vicinity of the Stadio Nazionale del PNF , to which Lazio then moved and remained there until 1953. The AS stayed on the Campo Testaccio until 1940 and also moved to the Stadio Nazionale . After the construction of the Stadio dei Centomila , later the Olympic Stadium, was completed in 1953, the two rivals found their new home there. Lazio supporters gather in Curva Nord (north curve), while Roma fans have their regular seat in Curva Sud (south curve).

The rivalry between the clubs is particularly evident among the fans. AS Roma comes from the politically left working-class district of Testaccio in the south of Rome, while Lazio is based in the politically right-wing , affluent Parioli in the north. In the meantime, the Roma fan circles are politically and socially very mixed, while the Lazio Ultras , especially the Irriducibili Lazio , who often come from the surrounding area rather than the city itself, have a close connection with right-wing extremism . Here, as in parts of AS Roma Ultras and other Roma fan groups , people openly acknowledge racism and fascism and see ex-dictator Benito Mussolini as a role model.

Several times, Lazio supporters showed banners in the stadium with inscriptions such as Auschwitz la vostra patria, i forni le vostre case! (“ Auschwitz is your home, the ovens your home!”). AS Roma were later referred to on banners because of their dark-skinned players such as Cafu , Aldair , Jonathan Zebina and Emerson as Squadra de negri ("Negro team"). After Roma won the first championship after 1983 in 2001, posters with the inscription Roma è merda (“Roma is shit”) were to be seen in the fan curve of the Biancocelesti during the derby . In the league match between AS Roma and FC Livorno (3-0) on January 29, 2006, a banner read “Lazio and Livorno - the same initials, the same stove”.

Paolo Di Canio , the former team captain of Lazio Rome, played a special role . Di Canio, formerly a member of the Irriducibili Lazio himself , ran after the derby game on January 6, 2005 to the Curva Sud to the Roma supporters and raised his arm to the Saluto romano ( German  Roman salute , which is similar to the Hitler salute ). This is forbidden by law in Italy and falls under the criminal offense of glorifying fascism. The Italian football association FIGC sentenced Di Canio to a fine of 10,000 euros and a one-game suspension.

There are also violent riots again and again. The city derby of March 21, 2004 had to be canceled in the fourth minute of the second half when the score was 0-0. It was rumored that a boy had been run over by a police car and killed in front of the stadium. Then three Roma fans stormed the square. They discussed with the two team captains Francesco Totti (Roma) and Siniša Mihajlović (Lazio) and demanded that the game be stopped.

Attempts were made to clarify the situation over loudspeakers and to calm down the stadium visitors, but this did not succeed. After an interruption of 20 minutes and a phone call between referee Roberto Rosetti and league president Adriano Galliani , the game was abandoned. After the demolition, fans were involved in violent clashes with the police in and outside the Olympic Stadium. There were 13 arrests and 176 injured (155 police officers and 21 rioters). A month later, the game was repeated and ended in an uneventful 1-1 draw.

There was one death in a Derby della Capitale . 33-year-old Lazio fan Vincenzo Paparelli, who was visiting the stadium with his wife, was hit directly in his left eye by a signal rocket during the encounter on October 28, 1979 and died. The bullet was fired from a block of Roma supporters from across the stadium. Paparelli was the second fatality in Italian football after Giuseppe Plaitano in 1963. He left a wife and two children.

Others

Record player and scorer in the Derby della Capitale: Francesco Totti

The first meeting of the two clubs took place on December 8, 1929 in the Serie A instead. Rodolfo Volk der Giallorossi decided the game in the Stadio della Rondinella in the 73rd minute with his goal to make it 0-1. Lazio had to wait until October 23, 1932 for the first derby win in a competitive game. The home game at the Stadio Nazionale del PNF in the first division season 1932/33 ended with a 2-1. AS Roma celebrated the highest victory in a derby with a 5-0 home win on November 1, 1933. Vincenzo Montella scored the most goals in a game, with four goals for Roma on March 10, 2002 to a 5--1 win helped. It is the highest away win in Derby history. In the derby of March 11, 1934, Lazio was 3-0 back in the home game after 15 minutes. With three goals from Alejandro Demaría (31st, 42nd and 83rd minutes), Lazio was able to achieve a draw.

The league duel on March 11, 1956 had to be canceled due to heavy snowfall. This had not happened before. The home game of Lazio was rescheduled for April 4th and saw the home team win 1-0 in bright sunshine. The Swede Arne Selmosson is the only player to have scored a goal for both teams in a derby. He played for the Biancocelesti from 1955 to 1958 , after which he played for the Roma until 1961. The longest winning streak in the league reached AS Roma in five games from November 30, 1958 to November 13, 1960. In addition, they only conceded one goal in the games. From December 2, 1990 to October 24, 1993 there was no winner in seven games. Six times the final score was 1: 1.

The most successful derby scorers are the Brazilian Dino da Costa and the native Roman Francesco Totti , who each scored eleven goals for AS Roma. Dino da Costa scored nine goals in Serie A and two in Coppa Italia. Francesco Totti scored all eleven goals in Serie A. Totti, who ended his career in summer 2017, is also the derby's record player with 44 appearances. Totti's last appearance in the city derby was on April 30, 2017, when he came on for Daniele De Rossi in the 73rd minute .
