Stefano Mauri (born January 8, 1980 in Monza ) is an Italian football player .

Career

In the club

Mauri started his career in 1998 at the amateur club AC Meda 1913 in the fifth class Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti . In his first year he was a regular player and was promoted to Serie C2 with the club . He played for Meda until 2001 before moving to the second division club FC Modena . In the 2001/02 season he rose to Serie A with Modena , but only made nine appearances in the promotion season. In his first first division season he played 25 times and helped his club to stay up. For the 2003/04 season Mauri was awarded to league rivals Brescia Calcio , for whom he scored seven goals in 30 games. In the same season Modena rose again from Serie A and Mauri moved to Udinese Calcio .

In his first season at Udinese, he qualified for the UEFA Champions League with the club . The 2005/06 Champions League season was not too successful for Udinese, as they only came third in the group stage behind FC Barcelona and Werder Bremen and thus relegated to the UEFA Cup . Things didn't go well in the league either, and after the fourth place in the preseason they found themselves on a disappointing 10th place during the winter break. At the end of January 2006, Mauri was awarded to Lazio Rome for six months. For the 2006/07 season he was finally signed by Lazio for a transfer fee of around three million euros. On May 28, 2012, he was arrested along with other current and former professionals in the course of a raid by the Italian police for possible involvement in a betting scandal.

On August 3, 2013, Mauri was banned from the Italian Disciplinary Commission for six months because of the betting scandal.

In the summer of 2016, Mauri left Lazio as his contract was running out. He remained without a club until January 2017 when he received a contract with his ex-club Brescia Calcio. Since the contract ended in summer 2017, Mauri has been without a club again.

In the national team

Mauri made his debut for the Italian national team on November 17, 2004 in a friendly against Finland . He played a total of eleven internationals, his last of them in 2011.
