The Campo Testaccio was a football stadium in the Italian capital Rome .
The stadium was located in the Roman district of the same name , offered space for around 20,000 visitors and served as the home of AS Roma from 1929 to 1940 .
history
AS Roma, founded in 1927, played their first home games at the Motovelodromo Appio and the Stadio della Rondinella . Between 1928 and 1929 the Campo Testaccio was built by Silvio Sensi, the father of the future Roma President Franco Sensi , based on the model of English stadiums - in particular the Goodison Park of Everton - as the "real" home of AS Roma. It consisted of four wooden stands and cost around 1.5 million lire at the time . The Campo Testaccio was on the Via Nicola Zabaglia in direct proximity to the Monte Testaccio . Since you could see the stadium well from here, numerous spectators met on the mountain for each game and watched the games free of charge.
The first official game on the Campo Testaccio, which was still provided with a hard court , took place on November 3, 1929. The AS Roma defeated's 5th matchday of the 1929-30 Serie A the FBC Brescia with 2: 1. The goal scorers on Römer Siete were Rodolfo Volk and Fulvio Bernardini .
In the following years the Campo Testaccio became an important part of the history of the Roma society . The Roma di Testaccio, with greats such as Volk, Bernardini, Amedeo Amadei , Attilio Ferraris , Raffaele Costantino , Guido Masetti , Enrique Guaita , Alejandro Scopelli and Eraldo Monzeglio , were seen as a troupe of strong character that always fought sacrificially. Although Roma failed to win titles at Campo Testaccio, they achieved some impressive victories. Including a 5-0 win against Juventus Turin on March 15, 1931 , which won five Italian championships in a row in the early 1930s .
For most of the 1937/38 season, the Roma moved to the Stadio Nazionale del PNF , which was more than twice as large , as one of the wooden stands had become dilapidated and had to be replaced by a concrete structure . After the renovation, the Roma returned to the now too small Campo Testaccio, but only two years later left it for good in the direction of the Stadio Nazionale del PNF. After the last game of the 1939/40 season , which ended 3-1 on June 2, 1940 against AC Novara , the stadium was demolished.
In total, the Campo Testaccio hosted 161 official Roma games . She won 103 of them, drew 32 times and suffered 26 defeats.
At the beginning of 2000 there were plans to rebuild the Campo Testaccio in slightly smaller dimensions. The work started in 2008 has so far remained unfinished and the site is currently in ruins .
