Paolo Negro (born April 16, 1972 in Arzignano ) is a former Italian football player who played in Serie A for FC Bologna , Brescia Calcio , Lazio Rome and AC Siena during his playing career .

Career

Paolo Negro started his career in the youth team of Brescia Calcio . In 1990 he signed his first professional contract with FC Bologna . With the Emilians he made the leap into the regular formation of the team after a short time and played in 49 league games for Bologna in two years. He then returned for a year to his youth club Brescia Calcio, for which he made 26 appearances in Serie A and was able to achieve his first professional goal.

In the summer of 1993 he moved to Lazio Rome . In Rome he was able to celebrate numerous successes with the team. In the 1999/2000 season he won the Italian championship with Lazio, in 1998, 2000 and 2004 he won the Coppa Italia with Lazio . He also won both the European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup with the club in 1999 . The defender reached the final of the UEFA Cup with the team in the 1997/98 season , but failed at Inter Milan. At Lazio he formed the long-standing central defender duo with Alessandro Nesta until the summer of 2002 . With a total of 376 competitive games for Lazio, Negro is in third place in the club's all-time ranking, only Giuseppe Favalli (401 appearances) and Giuseppe Wilson (394 appearances) played even more games for the club.

In 2005, after twelve successful years, he left the capital city and signed a two-year contract with AC Siena . With the Tuscans he managed to stay in the league in the last two years of his professional career and completed 50 more games in which he was able to score four goals.

National team

Negro was used in ten games in Italy's U-21s . He was called up for the U-21 European Football Championship in 1994 in the Italian squad and won the tournament with the team. The defender was also appointed to the Italian squad for the 2000 European Football Championship and was used in the last group game against Sweden.
