Atlántida is a seaside resort in the Canelones department in southern Uruguay .

Atlántida has also been a municipality since 2010, i.e. a municipality to which, in addition to the eponymous capital, other neighboring towns belong: Estación Atlántida , City Golf , Villa Argentina and Fortín de Santa Rosa .

geography

Atlántida is located on the banks of the Río de la Plata on the Costa de Oro , about 45 km east of the capital Montevideo near Parque del Plata . The distance to the Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco , the airport of Montevideo, is less than 30 km.

history

The development of today's area of ​​the city began in 1748. Later the Jesuit Estancia San Ignacio was located here . In 1908, a company was founded, including Juan P. Fabini, to promote forestry in the surrounding areas. Four years later, the parceling and sale of land began. In 1913 a hotel was built on the Rambla. Originally called Las Toscas, Atlántida was given its current name in 1915. On September 7, 1967, Law No. 13.609 put it in the “Ciudad” category.

At the last census in 2011, Atlántida had 5,562 inhabitants. During the summer season, Atlántida has a fivefold increase in the actual population.

Attractions

  • In the suburb of Estación Atlántida is the church of Cristo Obrero (Christ of the Workers) built in 1958 by the architect Eladio Dieste , whose architecture has received and is internationally recognized.
  • In the suburb of Villa Argentina, El Aguila looks out over the beach, a walk-in sculpture in the form of an eagle's head.
  • Edificio El Planeta - The building, which was built in the 1930s in the Art Deco style as a hotel, stands out due to its architecture reminiscent of the structures of an ocean liner. It has been a Uruquayian Monumento Histórico Nacional since 2005 .

Atlántida has two secondary schools ( Liceo ). These are Liceo Nº 1 de Atlántida , founded on March 15, 1961, and Liceo Nº 2 de Atlántida , located in Barrio Español , which began teaching in 2002.

Atlántida is located on the Ruta Interbalnearia (IB), which connects the seaside resorts on the south coast of Uruguay. Here it is linked to the Ruta 11 trunk road .
