Agostino Di Bartolomei (born April 8, 1955 in Rome , † May 30, 1994 in San Marco ) was an Italian football player .

Career

Di Bartolomei played for AS Roma between 1972 and 1984 , where he had his most successful period. Di Bartolomei was the first native Roman to become captain of the Roma . His style of play made him popular with the fans and winning the Italian championship in 1982/83 under Nils Liedholm finally helped him achieve hero status in the club. In addition, Di Bartolomei won the Italian Cup three times with the Romans. With Roma, he also reached the final of the 1983-84 European Cup , in which the Romans in the penalty shoot-out which Liverpool documents. Although Di Bartolomei was able to convert his penalty, the defeat hit him hard at his own stadium. In addition, he was no longer part of the team under the new coach Sven-Göran Eriksson and therefore moved to AC Milan in the summer of 1984 .

In 1987 Di Bartolomei moved to AC Cesena , and the following year to third division Salernitana Calcio . 1990 Di Bartolomei ended his career as a footballer.

Agostino Di Bartolomei committed on 30 May 1994 suicide - to the day ten years after the lost final in European Cup champions against Liverpool. His death is cited as an example of how difficult it is for some football players to find a new calling after a successful career.
