player

After playing very successfully at Palestra Itália, he went to Lazio Rome in Italy in 1930. Rt started this path together with his cousin Otávio (Fantoni II). In 1932 his brother Leonízio also joined the club. This was called Fantoni III or Niginho. His start was remarkable, with six goals in ten games. He stayed in Rome for five years, but could not win a title. He is said to have scored 38 goals in 113 league games.

Sports manager and trainer

After the end of his playing career, Ninão became a member of the board of directors of Palestra Itália in 1942. In 1943 he took over the post of coach for a year. He was able to lead the team to the state championship in Minas Gerais .

Oddities

On December 24, 1933, in an away game against Juventus Turin (game ended 2-2), Ninão is said to have broken the right fibula with a violent kick to opponent Raimundo Orsi . However, this was not noticed by the referee and therefore not punished.

In the biggest defeat in the history of Cruzeiro, the 2: 9 against Atlético Mineiro on November 27, 1927, João scored the only two goals of his club.

He also scored the most goals in a game for Cruzeiro. In the 14-0 win against Alves Nogueira on June 17, 1928, he scored ten times.

His brother Orlando also played for Lazio after the Second World War, the counting of the family name was continued there and this became Fantoni IV.

His sons Benito and Fernando Fantoni also became soccer players. Benito is named after Benito Mussolini , who paid for the birth of Benito after his father scored a goal for Lazio. Fernando also played for Lazio, he was called Fantoni V here.
