Francesco Janich (born March 27, 1937 in Udine ; † December 2, 2019 ) was an Italian football player who played a total of 425 Serie A games during his active career, making him one of the record players in the Italian league . Janich played in the position of libero and also ran for the Italian national soccer team .

Career

Francesco Janich began his professional career at Atalanta Bergamo , where he made his Serie A debut on September 16, 1956 in a 2-0 defeat by SSC Napoli . While he only made six appearances in his first season, he prevailed as a regular player in the second year. In 1958 he moved to Lazio Rome , where he won the Coppa Italia that same year . In 1961 he decided to move again, this time to FC Bologna , where he should have the longest and most successful time of his career. In a total of nine seasons, he made 294 league appearances there. In the 1963/64 season he won the Italian championship with his club , in 1969/70 and 1973/74 the Coppa Italia.

Janich was appointed to the Italian selection for the first time in 1962 , for which he made his debut on June 2, 1962 in the 2-0 defeat against Chile . Although he only made six appearances in the Squadra Azzurra , he took part in two soccer world championships , in 1962 in Chile and in 1966 in England .

Janich still holds a curious record for the Italian Serie A. He played most of the games in a row (425) without a single goal, so he didn't score a single goal in his entire professional career.
