Giuseppe Giannini (born August 20, 1964 in Rome ) is a former Italian football player and today's coach .
Player career
In the club
Giannini began his career at Frattocchie, a club in Marino near Rome . A little later he moved to AS Roma , next to Lazio the most famous club in the city. From 1982 to 1996 he was loyal to the Giallorossi and became a fan favorite and idol during this time. In his first season Giannini was Italian champion with the team coached by Nils Liedholm , even though he was rarely used as one of the youngest in the team. Then the midfielder won three more Coppa Italia with AS Roma . When Giuseppe Giannini moved to SK Sturm Graz in the summer of 1996 , the fans in Rome were terrified. However, he did not stay abroad long; he was too homesick. After further unsuccessful guest appearances at SSC Napoli and US Lecce , he ended his career in 1999.
Giannini played 318 times in Serie A and scored 49 goals. In European cup competitions he was used in 38 games (7 goals).
In the national team
Giuseppe Giannini took part with the Italian national team in the 1988 European Championship and the 1990 World Cup at home . Both times the Italians were eliminated in the semifinals. In 47 games for the "Azzurri", the 177 cm tall Giannini scored six goals, including the 1-0 winning goal in the group game against the USA at the 1990 World Cup.
Coaching career
Giuseppe Giannini's first coaching position was the US Foggia in 2004/05 . He then looked after the SS Sambenedettese Calcio , the Romanian club FC Argeş Piteşti and the US Massese .
In 2008 Giannini took over as head coach of the Apulian club Gallipoli Calcio , which he led to promotion to Serie B in the first season . In March 2010 Giannini resigned after unsatisfactory sporting performance of the team as head coach and was replaced by Ezio Rossi . The club was at that time after a series of defeats on a relegation zone and could not realize the league preservation under his successor Rossi.
On June 22, 2010 Giannini signed a two-year contract with third division team Hellas Verona . The goal was promotion to Serie B. After a mixed start to the season, he was released in November 2010. From late October 2011 to December 2011 he was head coach at US Grosseto . Due to disagreements with the club president, Giannini resigned voluntarily from his post.
On June 30, 2013, Giannini took over the Lebanese team and succeeded Theo Bücker, who moved to Al-Ettifaq (Saudi Arabia) .
