Johan Walem (born February 1, 1972 in Soignies ) is a former Belgian football player . In the meantime he worked for Belgacom and then concentrated more on his career as a football coach . During his time as an active player he played mainly in his home country and in Italy .
Walem has been the head coach of the Cypriot national team since February 2020 .
He is the cousin of the former Belgian runner Ruddy Walem .
Life
As a youth player, Walem was active at RWD Molenbeek . In 1986 he moved to RSC Anderlecht , where he made his debut in the First Division in 1991 . With the club he was three times Belgian champion and won the trophy once.
In 1997 Walem moved to Italy. At Udinese Calcio , the midfielder was the passgiver for Oliver Bierhoff and was nicknamed "Il Geometra" because of the precise moves. In 1999 he moved to AC Parma , but after a season he returned to Friuli .
In 2001, Walem briefly returned to Belgium and signed a contract with Standard Liège . After two years he moved to Italy again, this time for Torino in the Serie B . After a season in which only the 12th place was occupied, he moved to the league competitor Catania Calcio . following the 04/05 season, he ended his active career.
Walem was Belgian national player between 1991, his debut in the 1-0 defeat by Germany , and 2002 . He made 36 international appearances and scored two goals. He took part in the 2002 World Cup.
After his active time as a player, he became active as a coach. From 2012 to January 2020 he was the head coach of the Belgian U-21 national team . He then moved to Cyprus as national coach .
