Alexander Merkel ( Kazakh Александр Меркель , born February 22, 1992 in Alma-Ata ) is a Kazakh German football player . The midfielder is under contract with Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands and is a former German junior and senior national of Kazakhstan .

family

Merkel came to Germany in 1998 with his parents and siblings as a repatriate from Kazakhstan and grew up in Waldernbach in the Westerwald .

Club career

Beginnings and move to AC Milan

Merkel played in youth for VfB Stuttgart from 2003 . In 2008 he moved to the youth department of the Italian club AC Milan . Alexander Merkel made his UEFA Champions League debut for the Milanese first team on December 8, 2010 when he came on for Robinho in the 76th minute of the game against Ajax Amsterdam . On 6 January 2011, he came in the game with Cagliari Calcio his first appearance in Serie A . Two weeks later he was involved in the Coppa Italia's round of 16 against AS Bari with his first goal and an assist in his team's 3-0 victory.

Between Milan and Genoa

For the 2011/12 season, Merkel moved to CFC Genoa on a co-owner basis . In return, Stephan El Shaarawy moved to AC Milan on the same basis . In January 2012, AC Milan loaned Merkel from CFC Genoa. During his time, however, he came only to one use in the league and two appearances in the Coppa Italia . Otherwise Merkel fell out with an inner ligament tear. After the season, AC Milan bought the missing 50% of the transfer rights from El Shaarawy and in return sold its 50% of the transfer rights from Merkel to CFC Genoa. So he returned to Genoa for the 2012/13 season . During the summer break, CFC Genoa secured Merkel's full transfer rights. Merkel played his first competitive game on August 26, 2012, the first match day of Serie A 2012/13 with a 2-0 win over Cagliari Calcio , in which he was involved with one goal and with this 1-0 also his first goal in Serie A scored. In total, he played only six league games until the winter break.

Time as a "wanderer"

During the winter break at the beginning of 2013, Merkel moved within the league on a co-owner basis to Udinese Calcio . He signed on January 5, 2013 a contract with a term until June 30, 2018. For the second half of the 2013/14 season he was awarded to the English second division club Watford FC . There he came to eleven championship appearances in which he managed a hit. For the 2014/15 season Merkel switched to the Swiss Super League on loan to Grasshopper Club Zurich , where he was trained by Michael Skibbe . Here he was hardly used after the first three games and was no longer in the squad under the new coach Pierluigi Tami at the beginning of 2015 . The loan contract with Grasshopper Zurich expired in June 2015 and Merkel returned to Udine. Here he tore a cruciate ligament in September 2015 after he had come to play on the second match day , so he did not play any further games. For the 2016/17 season he moved to Serie B at club AC Pisa, which was coached by his former teammate Gennaro Gattuso . After less than a month he went to the German second division club VfL Bochum , where he received a two-year contract.

In February 2018 he moved to the Austrian Bundesliga club FC Admira Wacker Mödling . He left Admira after the 2017/18 season.

In July 2018 he moved to Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands , where he received a contract that ran until June 2019. The midfielder started the season as a regular with the Eastern Netherlands and failed with them in the league play- offs to participate in the Europa League qualification at FC Utrecht .

Merkel played for various youth national teams of the DFB . He played for the German U-18 national team for the first time on August 19, 2009 in a 3-0 win over Saudi Arabia when he was substituted on at half time. His second and last game in this age group was the 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso on September 9, 2009. On November 17, 2010 he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in the U-19 national team and scored the goal for 1: 0.

Kazakh national team

Merkel was nominated for the Kazakh national team for the first time in March 2015 . On September 6, 2015, he made his debut in the qualifier for the Euro 2016 against Iceland ; the game ended 0-0.
