Augusto Matías Fernández (born April 10, 1986 in Pergamino ) is an Argentine football player who has been under contract with Beijing Renhe in the China League One since January 2018 .

Career

In the club

Until 2006 Augusto Fernández played in the junior teams of River Plate in Buenos Aires . At the start of the Clausura 2006, he was used for the first time in a 5-0 win against Tiro Federal in the Primera División and just two game days later he made his starting eleven. From then on, the right winger was a regular player and made 14 appearances in the semi-series. In the following years he remained a fixture in the team of the capital city club. In 2008 he won the Clausura and thus the club's 36th championship title.

The first move to Europe followed in summer 2009. the French club AS Saint-Étienne took the Argentine under contract. Although he was already in the starting line-up in the first few games, he was unable to assert himself in Ligue 1 and returned to his home country after a year.

There Fernández joined the Club Vélez Sársfield, also from the capital Buenos Aires . The greatest success there was his second championship title in the Clausura 2011. At the 2011 Copa Libertadores he reached the semi-finals with the club and the quarter-finals again the following year . The 2011 Copa Sudamericana also ended in the semi-finals.

For the 2012/13 season, the Spanish first division promoted Celta Vigo showed interest in the midfielder and brought him to Europe for the second time. With the Galicians, Augusto Fernández immediately established himself as the right winger and played 36 of the 38 games of the season. He also scored six goals and prepared four more. He was able to continue this performance in the following season.

On January 1, 2016, Fernández moved to Atlético Madrid . He received a three and a half year contract dated June 30, 2019.

On January 31, 2018, Fernández moved to China League One to Beijing Renhe for a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros .

National team

After Augusto Fernández won the championship title for the second time and had also been internationally successful with Vélez Sársfield in the South American club competitions, he was also noticed in the Argentine national soccer team . On September 14, 2011, he made his international debut in a friendly against Brazil . He was also represented in the second leg two weeks later, but after that it was over a year before his next appointment.

From 2013 Fernández played more often in the national jersey, but he was only used once in a point game. It was the last match in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup when Argentina was already the group winners. After that he was invited to the immediate World Cup preparation and got a place in his country's 23-man squad for the tournament.
