Nuremberg 200 mile race in 1971

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 200-mile race in Nuremberg in 1971 , also 200 miles from Nuremberg (Interserie), Norisring, Nuremberg , took place on July 11th at the Norisring and was the fourth race of the Interserie of that year.

The race

The 200-mile race at Nuremberg was the fatal accident of the former BRM - Formula 1 -Fahrers Pedro Rodríguez overshadowed. He had an accident in the first of the two races; the exact cause remained unclear. Pedro Pedro Rodríguez drove a Ferrari 512M that Herbert Müller , his friend and racing partner , had reported at the 1971 Targa Florio . In the 11th lap of the first run, the Ferrari hit the bridge wall of the S-curve hard at almost 200 km / h. The badly damaged car caught fire immediately. One theory of what happened comes from a collision of the Rodríguez-Ferrari with the Porsche 910 of Kurt Hild out while lapping. The Porsche, which drives much slower than the Ferrari, surprised Rodríguez, who then hit cobblestones while overtaking with his left wheels and lost control of the car. A tire damage could also have led to a fatal accident after the tire is said to have slowly separated from the rim on the uneven road surface . When braking into the S-curve, the tire burst and the Ferrari hit the wall. Rodríguez was rescued from the burning wreck by the rescue workers, but died a little later in the Nuremberg Clinic .

Despite the serious accident, the race was not canceled. The cars just drove past the burning Ferrari. The second race - the first race was won by Peter Gethin in a McLaren M8E - was started even though the organizers had already been informed of Rodríguez's death. This run ended with the victory of Michel Weber in the Porsche 917 Spyder . Chris Craft won the overall classification in a McLaren .
