Werner Kriess
Werner Kriess (born September 6, 1947 in Klagenfurt ) is a former Austrian national soccer player .
Career
The defender Werner Kriess began playing football at the Klagenfurt police station before joining the Vienna National League in 1967 . After only one year he was brought to Innsbruck by Branko Elsner , where he played at FC Wacker Innsbruck and SSW Innsbruck until the 1978/79 relegation season . This period turned out to be particularly successful, as five championships and five ÖFB cup titles were won. Internationally, the quarter-finals of the 1978 European Cup was the greatest success.
Thanks to his performances in Innsbruck, Werner Kriess was on the team for the first time in 1971 against Hungary and was part of the team that only lost in the 1974 World Cup qualification in the playoff against Sweden in Gelsenkirchen. The defender became a regular player and soon wore the captain's bow under Leopold Šťastný . A lower leg fracture in 1975 at his 15th international match in Wales ended his team career abruptly.
At the end of his career, the Carinthian played in the 2nd division at IG Bregenz / Dornbirn from 1980, which he then took over as a coach until 1983. In the 1983/84 season Werner Kriess was seen again in the Bundesliga, as a coach of SK VOEST Linz , and subsequently he worked as a journalist for the Kurier and the Tiroler Krone.
In 2015 he admitted the use of Captagon during his time in Innsbruck. The use was common in football and it was never subjected to a doping test.
