Josef Stering

Josef "Sepp" Stering (born March 6, 1949 in Pichling near Köflach ) is a former Austrian national soccer player.

Career

Josef Stering began his career in his home country at ASK Voitsberg . In 1968 he moved to the Grazer AK , for which he scored five goals in his first professional season. In the summer of 1972, he switched to the up-and-coming SK VÖEST in Linz . In the 1973/74 season he was Austrian football champion with the works club . During the 1975/76 season Stering moved to SSW Innsbruck , with the syndicate he was again champion in 1976/77.

Already on April 27, 1969, the West Styrian celebrated his debut in the Austrian national team with a 3-1 away win over Malta in the Gzira Stadium in La Valletta when he came on for Helmut Redl at break . Another 25 appearances in the national team followed, including the qualifying games for the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Stering was unable to take part in the World Cup due to a serious knee injury (meniscus, collateral ligament and cruciate ligament tear in the championship game on November 5, 1977 against FC Admira / Wacker ), but it was not the end of his career that he feared. He was used again on April 29, 1978 in Innsbruck's 1-1 home draw against Rapid Vienna (from the 56th minute for Werner Kriess ). Although he was called up on August 20, 1979 by team boss Karl Stotz for the qualifying game of Group 2 against Norway for the 1980 European Championship, he was not even allowed to sit on the bench in the match on August 29. Thus, the 1-0 victory against Turkey in İzmir on October 30, 1977 , when Austria had finally made the aforementioned qualification, was his last international match.

From 1978 to 1980 he worked for TSV 1860 Munich , with which he celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga in the first season and was able to secure relegation in the following season. In 1980 he switched back to the Grazer AK , with whom he celebrated the club's first cup win in 1981 . Until 1986 he stayed with his parent club in Graz, where he ended his professional career. In total, he played 296 championship games for the Grazer AK and scored 48 goals.

After his professional career, he continued to play as an amateur at his home club ATUS Bärnbach ; He has also been running a tobacco shop in Bärnbach since 1986 .
