In August 2015, Hüseynov arranged a meeting with the journalist on the pretext of reconciliation. In fact, Hüseynov's cousin received him with a gang of thugs who inflicted such serious injuries on Әliyev that he died as a result of the incident. Hüseynov was initially sentenced to four years in prison, later this sentence was reduced to 14 months, which aroused great criticism from human rights activists. In the end, he was released even earlier (less than 10 months) for good conduct. He played his first game after his release on March 26, 2017 in the World Cup qualifier against Germany.
