The CIS Cup ( Russian Кубок Содружества , English Commonwealth Cup ) was a football competition for club teams from 1993 to 2016. Eligible were teams from the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Baltic States.
After Ukraine did not send a representative in the first two years, the 15 champions of the former Soviet republics played the title holder since 1995. Russia's U21s took part as an additional team to fill the field with 16 teams. In 2007 and 2008, Serbia was the first non-CIS state to be ranked 16th, but instead of the current champions (Red Star or Partisan Belgrade) only sent the lower-ranking capital club OFK . In 2009 and 2011, Inter Turku and HJK Helsinki replaced the champions of the Georgian league as Finnish champions.
In the last few years of its existence, the interest of spectators and clubs in the CIS Cup had declined sharply. After many teams from the former USSR are regularly represented in the UEFA Champions League , the UEFA Europa League and the AFC Champions League , the trophy is an additional burden for the national top clubs, so that in recent years (in addition to statements, even no longer taking part in the competition) second and third place placements were increasingly sent (e.g. 2010).
In 2012, only twelve U23 national teams (the former Soviet republics of Estonia , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , Latvia , Lithuania , Moldova , Russia , Tajikistan , Turkmenistan , Ukraine , Belarus and Iran ) took part in the competition.
In 2016 the competition was abolished. Record title holder with six successes is Spartak Moscow .
