Between

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Between was an instrumental group in the 1970s that settled between minimal music , ethnic jazz and world music . The group was initially conceived as an improvisation group for chamber music, but already played a fixed repertoire with the first record releases.

history

At the end of the 1960s, improvising musicians from a wide variety of disciplines met in Munich and played “music between the worlds”, between avant-garde, electronics, folklore, the Middle Ages, impromptu playing and samba. Between 1970 essentially consisted of the two young Munich composers Peter Michael Hamel and Ulrich Stranz , the Argentinian guitarist and instrument maker Roberto Détrée, who had lived in Munich since 1966, and Robert Eliscu, who was born in New York, who was principal oboist of the Munich Philharmonic at the time .

In 1971 the two American percussionists Cotch Blackmon and Charles Campbell, the flautist James Galway from Ireland, at that time the solo flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic , and on the occasion of the first recordings the sound engineer Ulrich Kraus. From 1973 on, other musicians from all over the world set their accents at Between: Tom van der Geld ( vibraphone ) and Roger Jannotta (woodwind instruments), both from the USA, Gary Lynn Todd from the USA (double bass), Jeffrey Biddeau from Trinidad ( congas ), Pandit Sankha Chatterjee from Calcutta ( tabla ) and as guests Walter Bachauer (electronics), Peter Müller-Pannke ( Tanpura and Sarangi ), Duru Omson (bamboo flute, percussion), Al Gromer Khan ( sitar ), the American jazz saxophonist Bobby Jones and the then Munich cathedral organist Franz Lehrndorfer .

Musical meaning

Between connected

“Influences of experimental, classical and medieval music with non-European elements, especially from Latin America and Asia. [...] There really is music 'between': And that always means here: more differentiated, cliché-breaking music is made than elsewhere in this genre. "

“Crossing styles, drawing from different cultures, sounds inspired by the Far East emerge, light and transparent like tissue paper , then you hear familiar folk-song melodies, then suddenly a swinging Charleston. So [...] these musicians are not concerned with demarcation, but with connection, understanding, trust. "
