Al Gromer Khan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al Gromer Khan (Alois Gromer, born April 8, 1946 in Frauenzell ) is a German sitar player and composer whose music spans the genres of ambient , new age, world music and electronica . He is the author of four novels and for more than 25 years the author of radio documentaries on the mystical aspects of music. He also works as a visual artist. In 2015 he was awarded the Rabindranath Tagore Culture Prize of the German-Indian Society for his life's work as a musician and performer of the sitar and surbahar of the highest rank, as a composer, writer and visual artist.

Early influences

Gromer was born in the Allgäu. During his boarding school, he founded a skiffle group and became a jazz guitarist . He declined to take up an academic or diplomatic career that his parents had planned for him. He left home to become a jazz musician and beat poet .

At the age of twenty, Gromer moved to London in 1966, where he spent the next six years and took part in a series of creative experiments that would have a lasting impact on him. Prince Tiane na Champassak of Laos introduced him to yoga philosophy and pop star Marc Bolan invited him to the jam sessions that he hosted all night long. He explored psychoacoustic phenomena with director Mike Figgis , and with saxophonist Ronnie Scott , who introduced Al to the jazz greats. Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) gave him a taste for English poetry. At times he attended a London art school. For a while he lived in Tangier, Morocco.

Development as a sitarist

Gromer's encounters in the 1960s deeply shaped his musical taste and style. A concert evening with the great Indian sitar player Ustad Vilayat Khan in Westminster Abbey in 1968 was groundbreaking. Gromer decided to devote his life to studying the sitar. In Vilayat Khan's younger brother Ustad Imrat Khan , who lived in London, he found a top-class teacher. Travel to India and seven years of sitar studies under Imrat Khan followed. In 1975 he finally got access to the Vilayat-Khani-Gharana through the Gandha ceremony with Imrat Khan. He was the first outsider in this particular gharana of Indian string players. After his introduction, Gromer added the nickname Khan to his stage name.

In the course of the seventies he took part in a series of protoelectronic music, among others with Popol Vuh and Werner Herzog . Numerous participations followed in projects of contemplative world music for radio, television, film and sound recordings, including with Peter Michael Hamels Hesse Between Music .

Stays in Turkey, Morocco and India, as well as concerts of classical Indian music in India and Europe followed. From 1990 he wrote texts and documentaries on the sublime aspects of universal music traditions for various ARD radio stations. Since 1974 Gromer has released over 50 albums of compositions of contemplative new world music.
