Thomas Kagermann

Thomas Kagermann (born July 22, 1950 in Wuppertal ) is a German violinist , singer , multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who is stylistically located in folk music , world jazz and new age music . In addition to the violin, he plays guitar , piano , mandolin , forest zither and various flutes . In the course of his career he has worked with many well-known artists and has published a number of records. He is also the founder and member of various performance and music projects that are also attracting international attention.

Kagermann, whose mother is an expressive dancer from Mary Wigman's school and cousin of Hugo Distler , completed a classical violin training until 1964. In 1973 he co-founded the Deutschfolk band Fiedel Michel , with whom he recorded several albums until 1980 and also performed successfully in other European countries such as the Netherlands , England , Scotland , Ireland and Switzerland . In addition, from 1978 he was a member of the folk rock formation Falckenstein , which recorded two LPs in collaboration with the producer Conny Plank .

From 1980 Kagermann pursued a solo career as a German songwriter and initially released several albums for the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft . In 1987 and the following years he completed a vocal training at the Italian School by Fritz Jäger ("Lamberti School"). In 1989 he got closer to world music and focused on the violin and singing. In 1991 he founded the free improvisation ensemble Papalagi , initially with guitarist Michael Lücker and bassist Urs Fuchs . From 1992 onwards there were collaborations with Andreas Vollenweider , Jan Akkerman , Büdi Siebert , Jaki Liebezeit and later with Nippy Noya . As a result of these collaborations, Kagermann has published a whole series of recordings of different styles and focuses over the years. He also worked with Matthias Frey , Roger Matura , Art of Infinity and Klaus Schulze and his producer Tom Dams .

Kagermann is co-founder of the music projects GNU and ZebraSommerwind , as well as TheatronToKosmo , a performance project from dance, painting and music with performances in Syria , Japan and Morocco . Since 1995 he has been conducting compositional explorations in the transition area between spiritual music, singing and free improvisation . He can also be heard regularly at various live events with different regional formations.

He lives in Forstmehren in the Westerwald and is married to the dance performance artist Eva-Maria Kagermann-Otte. In addition to music, his main interests are astrology and philosophy .
