Thomas Stöwsand (* 1947 in Cuxhaven ; † October 5, 2006 in Schwaz , Tyrol ) was a German jazz musician ( cello , bassoon , flutes ) and producer and concert agent.

Live and act

Stöwsand began his professional career as a journalist and musician: first he played with Alfred Harth , Thomas Cremer and Johannes Krämer in the Frankfurt free jazz formation Just Music (recorded in 1969, ECM 1002); In 1970 he went on tour with Leo Smith , Marion Brown , Manfred Eicher and Fred Braceful . Shortly afterwards he started working as a producer for Karl Egger's label JAPO Records . As a concert organizer, he was also instrumental in introducing artists from sister label ECM such as Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett to the European audience during the 1970s .

When the JAPO Records label ceased production, Stöwsand founded the Saudades Torneen concert agency in 1983 , which represented important North American and Brazilian musicians. The musicians supervised included John Abercrombie , Carla Bley , Steve Coleman , Jack DeJohnette , Dave Holland , Oregon and John Zorn as well as Egberto Gismonti and Hermeto Pascoal . Tours were organized not only in Europe, but also in Asia and South America (in 1993 the agency opened a branch in Rio de Janeiro ). "With his own passion and love for music and musicians, Stöwsand tirelessly promoted progressive jazz as well as crossover ."

Furthermore, Stöwsand was responsible for the program of the small jazz club Eremitage Schwaz in Tyrol; the club became the go-to place for countless Saudade musicians as they toured across Europe; "When the artists had an off day, Stöwsand had them perform in Schwaz," even if this meant many additional kilometers of travel. For example, even after his death, the musicians from Oregon ironically called the distance of 1000 kilometers between one and the other concert venue a "Stöwsand". After a serious illness, he died of complications from cancer.
