Hermitage Schwaz
The Eremitage Schwaz in the Austrian city of Schwaz was founded as a gallery by Gert Chesi in 1962 . In 1974 the Hermitage became a cultural association and one of the first jazz clubs in Austria .
Founding of the jazz club, Studio 12 and the Hermitage Gallery
In 1958 Chesi founded the first jazz club in Western Austria, “Studio 12” in Schwaz. For Chesi, jazz meant a commitment to freedom and liberation. He did not submit to the conservative, prudish and restrictive world of the petty bourgeoisie of the post-war period. The "Studio 12" and the jazz they played provoked the Schwaz population, who didn't know what to do with "Negro music".
In 1963 Gert Chesi became a freelancer for the ORF and organized the "Black September," a music and art festival in Schwaz.
In 1964 the "Eremitage Schwaz" gallery opened.
Artists such as Ernst Fuchs , Hilde Goldschmidt and Hans Staudacher exhibited in the Hermitage.
In the years that followed, Chesi transformed this cultural institution from a gallery to a jazz club, a bar for lateral thinkers, alternatives, revolutionaries, intellectuals, free spirits, artists, young people, etc.
From these beginnings of jazz music in Tyrol an international forum developed in which American, Japanese, Brazilian and European jazz greats of the time performed. Together with Jup Rathgeber , he was one of the pioneers of the avant-garde Schwaz art and culture scene. Today the Hermitage in Schwaz is one of the oldest Austrian jazz clubs and is a favorite of the stars.
The first jazz artists include Peter Abbrederis, Herbert Gugelberger, Helmut Erhard, Werner Kreidl and Gert Chesi.
Next came as Chick Corea , Gilberto Gil , Lester Bowie , Gerry Hemingway , Meredith Monk , Dave Holland , Art Ensemble of Chicago , George Russell , Don Moye , Dino Saluzzi and Kelvyn Bell on in Schwaz.
The Hermitage is an integral part of the Tyrolean cultural scene and is run as a cultural café and restaurant. International jazz concerts and cabaret projects take place regularly.
The restaurant has been leased to Peter Troyer since 2014. The cultural events are organized by the newly founded Eremitage Schwaz cultural association under the direction of Mag. Reinhard Schwitzer and Peter Troyer.
There are now 30 events a year.
The gastronomy of the Hermitage, under the leadership of Peter Troyer, has made a significant contribution to the fact that the Hermitage is once again widely known in Tyrol.
